How this calculator works

Platform income = sessions per week × weeks per year × what you receive per session − platform fees × 12.

Own-contract income = sessions per week × weeks per year × your contracted rate × (1 − billing fee) − software × 12.

The break-even rate is the contracted rate at which both options pay the same. If your payers' fee schedules are above it, your own contracts are likely to pay more for the numbers you entered.

What the numbers do not show

Ownership of your contracts. Contracts in your own name stay with you if you change platforms, open a group or add clinicians.
The switching period. Credentialing takes 60 to 120 days per payer. Plan the move so income does not stop while contracts are pending.
Patient continuity. Check your platform agreement for any rules about patients you saw through the platform.
Work you take on. Benefits checks, claims and follow-up are handled by the platform today; with your own contracts, a billing service or your own time covers them.

Common questions

Do therapists earn more with their own insurance contracts than through Headway or Alma?

Sometimes, not always. It depends on the rate you receive through the platform, the rates you can get in your own contracts, any platform fees, and what billing costs you on your own. The calculator compares them using your numbers.

Where do I find my own contract rates?

Each payer shares a fee schedule during credentialing or contracting. You can ask for it before signing. Rates vary by payer, state, license type and code, so compare the codes you bill most, such as 90834 and 90837.

Can I keep using a platform while I get my own contracts?

Often, yes, but check your platform agreement first. Many clinicians keep seeing patients through the platform while they are credentialed individually, then move payers over one at a time once each contract is effective.

How long does it take to get my own insurance contracts?
